Between the covers
with Sterling Staff
Sometimes I like to think that books have personalities. You might be able to tell a little bit about a book by glancing at its cover. Popular mysteries sport colors that mimic shadows or gun metal, romance novels pout in lipstick tinted hues, and science fiction… well, as much as I love that genre they might as well stick pocket protectors on each and every one of those covers.
In Teen literature, genre cliques are even more pronounced as authors scramble to pen something that falls within the latest storytelling fad before it goes out of style. Perhaps that is one of the reasons I find the odd ducks of young adult fiction so refreshing. If these books were to attend high school, they would never figure out which table to sit at during lunch. (Before you ask, yes, I was one of those teens.)
